There can be no doubt that there exists a long-standing political divide between Russia and the Western world. This conflict of interests, opinions and ideology has always been accompanied by a cultural alienation between Russia and the West.
A picture marked by authoritarianism as well as cultural and economic backwardness. This feeling of distance from my own cultural identity resulted in my choice to travel to Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia.
I wanted to check the adequacy of my perception of the country through a firsthand experience. The decision to begin my photographic journey here was based on its long history of ethnic diversity and cultural richness. Kazan is a city full of contrasts and possibilities, where Russian culture, Tatar tradition and modernity coexist peacefully. The Corona pandemic brought public and private life to a standstill within a few days.
Much of what we took for granted has been suspended indefinitely: Visiting offices, schools, restaurants, parks and cultural institutions.
This series was created from March 16 — 20 in my district Neckarstadt. Two days before, all events were cancelled and all cultural institutions, restaurants and bars were successively closed.
